- In the United Kingdom on 8 May 1945, more than one million people celebrated in the streets to mark the end of the European part of the war.
- Huge crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square and all the way up the Mall to Buckingham Palace.
- King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the then Prime Minister Winston Churchill, waved from the balcony of the palace before the celebrating crowds.
